BUILDING A RAILROAD

RICHES OF ROCKIES
This is an extension of the gold fever program. Students will learn how the 1864 gold rush and other mineral discoveries impacted the area. At the end, students will get the chance to search for gold themselves by panning as miners did in 1864. Guaranteed gold for all is available for an extra cost of $12 per participant!

TRAPPING AND TRADING
Students will work with the currency of the times: animal pelts! With hands-on activities, students will learn about the Hudson Bay Company, the fur trade in Canada, discuss the value and uses of furs as well as orientation skills using compasses.

Students will get to work with Fort Steele’s Clydesdale horses and learn the importance of animal care. They will then tour around the entire site to visit other animals and learn their importance to Fort Steele’s past and present as well. Students will then end the program with a wagon ride around town.

FISHERVILLE TOUR
Take a tour of the old grounds where the gold town of Fisherville once stood. Walk part of the remaining part of the Dewdney Trail, eat an apple in Mr.Griffiths apple orchard, take a look at the Chinese burial grounds, and view the immense effects of Hydraulic and placer mining. (Note: Fisherville is located 7km up a dirt road from Fort Steele and own transportation is required to meet a Fort Steele staff member there)

FORT STEELE FOLLIES
Learn some basics to acting and recreate events that occurred in the 1890s in Fort Steele. Scripts are sent out prior to group arrival to work on memorization. Once at Fort Steele students will get the chance to get costumes and props and then perform their scenes for their fellow mates on the streets of Fort Steele or on the Wildhorse Theatre stage.
